Tuesday 20 December - Hosanna to the Son of David (Thomas Weelkes)
Sung by the choir of Truro Cathedral.
qui aperis, et nemo claudit;
claudis, et nemo aperit:
veni, et educ vinctum de domo carceris,
sedentem in tenebris, et umbra mortis.
O Key of David and sceptre of the House of Israel;
you open and no one can shut;
you shut and no one can open:
Come and lead the prisoners from the prison house,
those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.
This is the first real idea of the Christian belief of Incarnation, which can be summed up in the following statement: "if the God, Jesus, is happy to be the descendent of the great Hebrew King (and very human man), David, then God has made himself truly human, and that is something special."
Thomas Weelkes seems to have been an interesting chap - according to Wikipedia "Weelkes was later to find himself in trouble with the Chichester Cathedral authorities for his heavy drinking and immoderate behaviour. He had previously been fined for 'urinating on the Dean from the organ loft during Evensong'." YA RLY.
Hosanna to the Son of David.
Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna, thou that sittest in the highest heavens.
Hosanna in excelsis Deo.
